How can you create a smoothie that is packed so full of nutrients you’ll be exploding with healthy goodness? Hmm, maybe exploding isn’t the most appropriate word here. Let’s change it to glowing. Ahhh yes, that’s better. Back to smoothies that’ll have you glowing with healthy goodness…
While I eat primarily plant-based, there are some quality animal-based foods that my body appears to appreciate. Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate has been a seriously fun find and solid addition to my morning smoothies*. It’s tasteless, dissolves in liquid and adds regenerating love to my trillions of cells. Here’s a little info on it:
“It will benefit hair, skin tissue, muscle, cartilage, ligaments, and blood cell growth. Some doctors are referring to this product as the new anti-aging product of the century. Hydrolyzed Collagen is the unique combination of amino acids in concentrated levels that promotes rapid re-production of blood cells for healing and conditioning over other proteins especially for bone and joint health care.”
*Remember, as with any food you consume, animal-based or plant-based, do your research to ensure its quality of source, production and sustainability. Don’t just take my word for it or the word of an “expert” you see on a popular show or blog…you’re putting this food into your body after all, not theirs.
Within the ingredients list below, I’ve noted some alternatives to decrease your sugar intake. This will change the flavor a bit. But if you’re going for less sugar, I’m guessing you’re prepared for this change in flavor. Besides, there are other wonderful things in this world that add flavor to a smoothie, besides fructose-based fruit.
If you want to get your almond milk as “clean” as possible (meaning: raw, organic, fresh and without preservatives), you can either 1) make your own (see recipe here on Vega plus how to make your own raw granola) or purchase unpasteurized almond milk from Orange County based Rawmond Milk. Okie dokie, smoothie time!
- 2 cups almond milk (or other nut milk)
- 1 scoop Vega Clean Protein – chocolate
- 1 scoop collagen (this contains animal product) or VegaPro or Vega Clean Protein
- 1 banana (or use ½ avocado to decrease sugar intake and get more healthy fats and a creamier substance)
- ½ cup – 1 cup frozen berries (decrease amount for less sugar)
- 3 tbsp flaxseed
- Big handful of greens (e.g. swiss chard, spinach)
- Pinch of sea salt
- Option: 1 tbsp chia seeds
Blend all ingredients together. Top raw cacao nibs on top for extra boost of liveliness and micronutrients.
Consume happily while dancing about and whistling the delightful music from Something’s Gotta Give. Or sing the Lion King theme. That one is quite invigorating. It’s your call.
Makes approximately 2 servings.
How do you normally eat your breakie in the morning? (I’m assuming you do eat a breakie…and if not, start eating one please. Focus on hydrating foods. This will encourage a fluid energy level throughout the day.) Why not revive and rejuvenate your body from the outside in, while you’re enjoying a smoothie that’s doing the same from the inside out! Here are a few ideas:
